Why has my laptop keyboard stopped working?
A laptop keyboard usually stops working because of dirt or wear under the keys, liquid that has reached the keyboard, a loose ribbon cable, or a software or driver problem. An external USB keyboard is the quickest test. If the external keyboard works normally, the laptop's own keyboard or its connector needs attention. If a liquid spill is involved, the sooner it is checked the better, as residue can spread to the motherboard.

Signs of a keyboard fault
- One key, a row of keys or a whole section does not respond
- Letters repeat, or the wrong characters appear when you type
- Keys feel sticky or loose, or have popped off
- The keyboard stopped working after a spill
- The backlight is patchy or does not switch on
- The keyboard works in some places, such as the BIOS screen, but not in Windows

Dust and crumbs
Debris under the keycaps stops the contacts from registering, which causes sticky or dead keys.
Liquid spills
Tea, coffee and water get under the keys and corrode contacts. Sugary drinks are the most damaging, and residue can travel to the board.
Loose or damaged ribbon cable
The flat cable joining the keyboard to the board can work loose or wear through, disabling the whole keyboard or a section of it.
Software or driver problems
If the keyboard works in the BIOS but not in Windows, the cause may be a driver or a setting rather than hardware.

Test with an external keyboard
This tells us quickly whether the laptop’s own keyboard, its connector or the software is at fault.

Check for liquid damage
We look for residue and corrosion. If liquid is involved, we also inspect the area around the keyboard before doing anything else.

Reseat or clean
A loose ribbon cable is reseated and cleaned. Dirt under keys is cleaned out where the design allows.

Replace the keyboard if needed
If the keyboard is faulty, we fit a matching replacement. On some laptops it is part of the top cover, which we confirm first.

We test all keys and the backlight, and confirm nothing has been affected around the keyboard.

- Use an external USB keyboard to keep working while you wait

- Do not keep using or charging a laptop after a spill
- Do not use a hair dryer, which pushes liquid deeper and can warp parts
- Do not pry off keycaps without knowing your model, as the clips break easily

- Do not shake or tap the laptop to dry it while it is switched on

Plug in an external USB keyboard. If it works normally, the laptop’s own keyboard or connector is the problem. If the built-in keyboard works in the BIOS or startup screen but not in Windows, it is more likely a driver or software fault.
Switch the laptop off, unplug the charger and turn it upside down to drain the liquid. Do not try to turn it on. Call us as soon as possible, because liquid can reach the motherboard and the damage grows with time.
